424: ANATOMY OF AN ERECTION

“The pursuit of knowledge is never ending. The day you stop seeking knowledge is the day you stop growing.” —Travis Ciaccio

It’s a pretty basic understanding that in response to a visual or mental stimuli a man can become aroused and have an erection.

But what’s the science behind an erection?

Why does it matter that you know the science?

There may be times when a husband has an erection and yet his wife may not even notice that he has one.

Is this a form of rejection?

Before we go there let’s discuss the anatomy of an erection.

The real biology was never covered in sex ed and it’s important for both men and women to understand what’s going on here.

According to Coloplast:

The penis has two chambers inside it called the corpora cavernosa. These chambers extend from the head of the penis deep into the pelvis. The insides of these chambers are made of spongy tissue and have the ability to gain blood volume and grow in size.

When a guy is running about daily life, the arteries supplying blood to the penis are only partially open. This provides the blood flow needed to keep your tissue healthy.

In response to physical or mental stimulation, your brain sends signals to trigger a hormonal response that allows those same arteries to open completely.

Open arteries allow more blood to enter the corpora cavernosa. The blood enters faster than it can leave through the veins. The veins get compressed, trapping blood in your penis. This chain reaction lets you achieve and maintain an erection.

So basic biology an erection is a hormonal response to stimuli that creates a rapid blood flow to the penis which in turns compresses the veins resulting in the erection.

But why does the science matter?

Because it’s not just about how an erection occurs, it’s also about how often and when an erection occurs.

See, not all erections are in response to that visual or mental stimuli.

There are situations in which a man can have what is termed a random or reflex erection.

In fact men can have 3-5 erections per night.

These nighttime erections, specifically the ones that happen in the morning can become an issue for the two of you if you’re not aware of what’s happening.

In this week’s show Tony and Alisa talk about about the how and why a man’s penis becomes firmer, engorged and enlarged, also known as an erection.
