517: MARRIAGE THROUGH THE YEARS: PART 6 — GETTING OLDER

“You can’t help getting older but you don’t have to get old.” —George Burns

We’re all getting older.

There is no way to stop the aging process. However you do have the choice, will you get older or will you get old?

It sounds tricky, but it’s merely about focusing on what you can control and letting go of what you can’t. Getting older doesn’t need to be a negative thing in your life or your marriage. Expected yes, but a barrier to your happiness, no.

Life is full of many ups and downs. Many things are going to change over the years from your looks to your libido. It’s normal to be concerned about the impact of aging on your marriage.

Getting older is a funny thing. With age you have the knowledge gained from so many of life’s experiences but you can also develop a feeling of uncertainty over the things that “could” happen next.

You may have concerns about:

  • Aches and pains
  • Debilitating illness
  • Having to care for a spouse
  • The onset of disease like cancer, dementia or Alzheimer
  • Having to go from partner to caregiver
  • Not being able to function the way that you are used to

Just remember that there will be things that you can control and those that you cannot. People will get sick. You will have to care for each other at one point or another. That’s all a part of marriage.

What you don’t want to do is get lost in, or waste your time on those things that you cannot control. If you do, you’ll get lost in the what-if moments and forget all about what’s happening right now.

Don’t lose sight in the beauty of right now because you’re worried about things that may be out of your control. Make the choice to stay #inthemoment with your spouse no matter what your age is.

In case you were wondering, sex doesn’t have to stop in your 50s or 60s. You can still have great sexual intimacy well into your 80’s (and beyond) by embracing the intimacy lifestyle

Decide to be intentional with your commitment to each other; enjoy sex with your spouse, celebrate the season you are in right now, forget about those wrinkles, love well and love fully!

You can create a marriage that is not only age-proof but built to last and withstand whatever the world throws at you. Make a plan to run this race together and finish strong.
