Fun. Are you having it?

Specifically, as a couple, have you found you are not having enough fun recently?

After a long week, the kids, demanding work schedules, volunteering, extended family and all the other stuff that has you so… busy.

Busy all the time.

It’s easy to get caught up in all of those things because they are really important.

But often you get so caught up that you forget about your mental health.

Fun and its relative laughter are a key ingredient in that. You need to laugh and have fun as much as you can. In marriage, you need to make marriage fun!

That’s because fun activities decrease your levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and increase your serotonin levels, which can help your mood and your sleep.

Having fun encourages creativity and productivity too, both of which can be incredibly beneficial in a marriage.

Researchers have found that married couples who go on frequent dates and take part in activities together have a lower divorce rate, and feel better about the quality of their marriage. So that is a tremendous bonus!

If it’s that good for you, then why aren’t more couples having fun?

So you may already know what is preventing you from having more fun. Your list might include things like lack of time, general busyness, work, kids, saying yes to too many things.

You also may have found that the comfortable routine of life may have gotten in the way.

Then there are stresses and distractions. It’s hard to have fun when you haven’t worked through the pain.

And yet you can make a plan to get out of the funk and start having fun! First, give yourself permission to have fun! There is nothing wrong with scheduling a fun day or changing up your routines!

And if there is a stressor, it’s time to address it. If your marriage has had a breach of trust, please get help. Seek a coach or a counselor to repair and restore your marriage so that you can have fun.

And then get doing it! Make marriage fun. You just need to open yourself up to it!
