808: WHEN SIDE EFFECTS ARE HURTING YOUR MARRIAGE

“Whether you take them every day, every month or a few times a year, your doctor needs to know every one of the medications you are taking.—Jupiter Concierge Family Practice

side effects are hurting

Side effects from medication or supplements impact more than just you—they also impact your marriage.

Many times, it’s hard to talk about side effects with a spouse. Your symptoms might stir up insecurities or frustrations. Maybe you don’t want to burden your spouse or your doctor.

But in trying to figure it out all by yourself, you’re putting yourself and your emotional intimacy at risk.

Sometimes, side effects are dramatic; other times, they’re a nuisance. Either way, you need to acknowledge them.

You might experience things like:

  • Fatigue
  • Hair loss
  • Irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety

Obviously, these side effects will affect how you go about your daily life. But they will also affect your spouse.

Understandably, you might not want to share all the side effects you experience. You might feel embarrassed. Or you might want to try to fix it yourself.

But when you choose not to discuss side effects with your spouse, you choose isolation. You’re choosing disconnection.

You can quickly cause cracks in your Emotional Intimacy Pillar when you stop including your spouse in what’s happening with you.

Of course, your spouse might already know the side effects. They might see the hair loss, sense your anxiety, or recognize that your libido seems lower.

But your spouse might not know how to approach you about it. They don’t want to embarrass or upset you.

Unfortunately, disconnection will continue to build in your marriage until you address it, especially since those side effects can impact not only your emotional intimacy but also your physical, financial, and sexual intimacies.

So what can you do about this?

First, make sure your spouse knows what you are taking. Give them specifics. You should both be aware of what the medication or supplement is, what it is supposed to address, and what side effects to look out for.

If you’re the spouse in this situation, try asking this question: “Just so I know, what are the side effects?”

Second, make sure you have done enough research about the side effects. Don’t start taking anything you don’t understand.

Additionally, commit to speaking up when something isn’t going well.

No one can make you tell them what’s going on with you, so you’ll have to be honest with your medical provider—and your spouse—if something doesn’t feel right.

At the end of the day, if you’re experiencing strange side effects, you need to discuss it with a medical professional.

Side effects from medication or supplements can be complicated, so speak with someone trained to help you find the right solution for your circumstance.
