819: CROSS COUNTRY MOVING ADVENTURES

“Moving to a new place is not just about changing your address, it’s about starting a new chapter in your life.—Anonymous

Cross-country moving can be an adventure, but it can also test your marriage.

Whether you’re moving because of a new job, a growing family, or a long-time dream, you’ll face joys and challenges throughout the move. For example, you might have car trouble, fights, or unexpected costs that leave you on edge.

A move signifies a new chapter of your marriage. So how you approach your 6 Pillars of Intimacy® during this time is important!

The average person moves approximately 11 times in their life. A majority of those moves happen between the ages of 18 and 45. At one point or another, you and your spouse will likely experience your own moving adventurewhether cross country or in the same town.

Here’s how moving impacts your marriage:

Emotional Intimacy: You’ll have opportunities to talk about your emotions, this new chapter of life, the logistical challenges you’re facing, and more.

Physical Intimacy: The stress of moving might limit your touch. Alternatively, you might have to spend time apart driving different cars or moving at different times. The physical distance can make it tricky to feel close and connected.

Financial Intimacy: Unforeseen expenses can place stress on both of you. It’s vital to talk about money during a move!

Spiritual Intimacy: There is a lot you can pray for together while moving, including your new community, safety during travel, and any issues that arise.

Recreational Intimacy: Even if you don’t have time for a date night, you might be able to make some fun memories while moving.

Sexual Intimacy: Your sex life might go on pause during a hectic move, or you might use sex as a way to reconnect.

During stressful situations like a cross-country move, don’t try to focus on all of The 6 Pillars of Intimacy®. It’s normal to hit pause on a few of them. However, be intentional about it.

Have a conversation in advance about which pillars you want to focus on and which pillars will go on the back burner during the move. Setting reasonable expectations helps you ease stress, minimize conflict, and avoid feelings of frustration or disappointment.

Moving is stressful, but the two of you are a team. Share the responsibility of making decisions. Communicate your needs and focus on the most critical issues.

Remember, moving is a pivotal moment in your marriage. Use this time to reminisce on the past and dream about the future. Don’t try to rush the journey. Instead, stay attentive and engaged with one another. As a result, you can arrive ready for a new adventure together.
