835: TURNING THANKFULNESS INTO DEEPER CONNECTION

The more you practice the art of thankfulness, the more you have to be thankful for.” —Norman Vincent Peale

thankfulness

We all need a reminder now and then to express our thankfulness.

When it comes to your marriage, don’t hold in your appreciation for who your spouse is and what they mean to you.

It doesn’t have to be complex or elaborate, either.

Yes, this is a busy week. But can you find two minutes to thank your spouse for how they show up in your relationship?

Because ultimately, thankfulness strengthens your closeness and connection (also known as intimacy).

Among the ONE Family, you all shared some of the things you’re grateful for this year:

  • Starting a life in a new city together
  • Having the best sexual intimacy in 33 years
  • Seeing improvements in our communication
  • Healing and recovery
  • Constant love and support from my spouse
  • Both of us working to grow and put effort into our marriage

Whether it’s laughter in the little things, stepping up during a challenging season, or simply growing together year after year, thankfulness strengthens your intimacy as a couple.

But unless you express your gratitude, your spouse might never know. That’s why it’s so important to ask your spouse the simple question, “How do you like to receive my gratitude?”

Your spouse might like to hear you say it when they get home from work. Or maybe they prefer to have it written on a card or post-it note they can keep on the nightstand.

Appreciation can be expressed in other tangible ways, too, like hugging your spouse, touching them, or praying for them. It might be surprising your spouse with their favorite treat or going out of your way to initiate sex

You have to know how to express your thankfulness in a way your spouse can receive so that you can connect at both the head and heart levels.

Remember that how you and your spouse like to give thanks might not be how you want to receive it.

Again, just ask.

One simple question can ensure you strengthen your marriage with thankfulness during this holiday season and into the new year.
