844: Romance the One You Love

The word ‘romance,’ according to the dictionary, means excitement, adventure, and something extremely real. Romance should last a lifetime.” —Billy Graham

Whether it’s Valentine’s Day or any of the other 364 days of the year, it’s important to know how your spouse likes to be romanced

Romance is all about excitement and adventure. Undoubtedly, it was part of what led the two of you to get married in the first place.

The tricky part is that as you change, your preferred romantic gestures change, too. So you have to stay curious.

You can’t stop romancing the one you love just because you don’t know what they like. And you shouldn’t assume it’s the same answer from your early relationship days. Romance is too essential to get lazy about.

The good news is that it’s not hard to discover what makes your spouse feel seen and loved!

In fact, this conversation isn’t just about Valentine’s Day. Only about half of couples in the ONE Family (55%) actively celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Instead, there are plenty of other special days during the year when you can romance the one you love, such as birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s/Father’s Day, Spouse’s Appreciation Day, and so on.

Here are some of the top responses on how people in the ONE Family like to be romanced on special days:

What stands out to you? Tell your spouse how you prefer them to romance you and ask them what romantic gestures are meaningful to them, too. Then, write it down on your phone.

For instance, open your notes app and start a “Romance Reference Guide.” From now on, each time you get a new idea from your spouse about how to romance them, you can add it to the list.

If needed, schedule reminders to write them a note or pick up flowers.

It’s really not complicated! All it takes is a few minutes of intentionality to make a major impact on your emotional intimacy.

Finally, pick one romantic gesture from what your spouse shared and do it this week. (Let’s be honest, sometimes you need to get a little momentum going!)

When you keep romance a regular part of your marriage, you can stay connected even when the storms of life come.

So step out of your comfort zone and do something to make your spouse feel seen, loved, and desired.

Intentionality and action can change everything.
