880: Adventures Beyond the Bedroom

Want a stronger sexual connection? Try getting outside your bedroom!

Among the ONE Family, 88% of you agree that new locations make sexual intimacy more exciting. And psychology actually backs that up.

Trying new things increases dopamine (the feel-good chemical) and forces you to be mentally present. After all, you can’t be on autopilot in a new environment.

Sharing something adventurous with your spouse also strengthens your bond. It reduces performance pressure because you’re focused on the fun of trying something new!

And, of course, it forces you to be intentional and usually increases anticipation.

Sexual adventures in new locations can strengthen your 6 Pillars of Intimacy® and create lasting memories.

But what counts as adventurous?

That’s up to you! Basically, it’s anything unusual, exciting, bold, or maybe a little risky.

Here are some real-life examples from the ONE Family (full list shared in the episode!):

  • On the back deck in the middle of a thunderstorm
  • In a dressing room of a very popular chain store
  • 50 yard line of high school football field with snow flurries
  • On the balcony of a cruise ship, hotel, or condo
  • An airplane, a car, or on a bulldozer in the middle of a field

In truth, it’s not about how exotic the location is. This is all about breaking out of your routines.

Routines are predictable. And while there’s comfort in predictability, there’s also the risk of your sex life becoming mundane and starting to feel like just another task on the to-do list.

So what can you do if you’re stuck in the “only at night, only in bed” routine or if one or both of you is hesitant to get adventurous?

Step 1: Talk about it. Here are some conversation starters:

  • “I heard this podcast episode about trying new locations for sex. What do you think?”
  • “On a scale of 1-10, how adventurous do you want to be with where we have sex?”
  • “What would make this fun for you instead of stressful?”

Step 2: Try one new location this week. Here are some tips depending on your season of life:

  • If you have young kids or privacy concerns, try a different room in your house, a different time or day, or even in your car parked in your own garage.
  • If you have more flexibility, book a hotel room, have sex in your backyard at night, or go on a weekend getaway.

Step 3: Create your own adventure map.

  • Download a travel tracking app or just look at a map.
  • Then, mark where you’ve been sexually intimate around the world.
  • As always, please obey all local laws. Laws vary in different cities, states, and countries, and we do not condone any activities that would be considered illegal.

In short, having sexual adventures beyond the bedroom is all about bringing intentionality, novelty, and fun back into your sexual intimacy.

Don’t overthink it or wait for perfect timing. Just take one step toward adventure in your marriage!
