891: O Come Let Us Adore Him

Spiritual intimacy can be more intimate than sexual intimacy.” —Alisa DiLorenzo

Christmas is supposed to be about peace, joy, and celebrating Jesus. But in many marriages, it can feel hard to connect spiritually with your spouse right now.

Between the shopping, cooking, hosting, and trying to keep everyone happy, it’s easy for Christ to feel distant in your marriage, even though He’s supposed to be at the center of it all.

We hear this from couples all the time:

  • “We just don’t feel connected spiritually right now.”
  • “It’s hard to get on the same page.”
  • “We aren’t really spiritual people.”

It’s an important reminder that spiritual intimacy doesn’t happen automatically just because you’re married. It takes the same intentionality and effort as any of the other 6 Pillars of Intimacy®.

But here’s the good news: about half the couples in the ONE Family (54%) said they’ve prayed together this season. Others are connecting spiritually by attending church together, lighting Advent candles, reading Scripture, and praying with each other.

Whether you’re feeling close and connected right now or your spiritual intimacy has taken a hit, there’s no better time than now to jumpstart your spiritual intimacy.

Here are 4 simple ways to grow spiritual intimacy with your spouse this Christmas:

  1. Pray Together. If you don’t know what to say, try this: “God, thank You for this season. Help us stay connected to You and to each other.”
  2. Read Scripture Together. Open up Luke 2 or another part of the Christmas story and talk about what stands out to you.
  3. Share Your Heart. Ask your spouse: “What has God been teaching you lately?” or “Where do you feel spiritually dry or hungry right now?”
  4. Start a Tradition. Whether you light an Advent candle together, read a Christmas devotional, or spend quiet time together before the kids wake up, find something that strengthens your spiritual connection.

Even in the busiest seasons, you can build spiritual intimacy through small, consistent actions. And remember: spiritual intimacy can be even more intimate than sexual intimacy. So don’t ignore it.
