894: Conversations That Never Get Old

Sometimes the most important conversations are the most difficult to engage in.” —Jeanne Phillips

The ONE Extraordinary Marriage Show is turning 16! In this special birthday episode, we’re reflecting on how these weekly conversations have helped tens of thousands of couples around the world.

If you’d told us in 2010 that we’d still be in front of these mics in 2026, we would’ve laughed. Honestly, we couldn’t have imagined what was to come.

But isn’t that just like marriage?

When you said “I do,” you didn’t entirely know what you were getting yourself into.

And over these 16 years, the ONE Family has had so much to celebrate: vow renewals, 7 Day Sex Challenge babies, traveling together on marriage getaways, and more.

But more than anything, one thing’s become crystal clear: most couples want a strong marriage, but they don’t always know how to talk about what’s really going on.

It’s hard to talk about sex, describe why you feel disconnected, or bring up sensitive topics like finances or unmet needs.

And while we’ve been able to have these conversations on the podcast, it’s also your hugs, poll responses, and questions that give hope to other couples facing the same challenges.

When you listen to other people’s stories and breakthroughs, it helps you break free from the roommate cycle, prioritize your relationship, and start having the important conversations.

Sixteen years ago, we committed to having a conversation once a week. But regular, honest conversations can transform any marriage.

You’ve told us this podcast helped you:

  • Experience better sex and deeper sexual intimacy
  • Try things together like the 7 Day Sex Challenge
  • Be more intentional with each other
  • Understand the importance of all 6 Pillars of Intimacy®
  • Focus on your marriage instead of just managing life
  • Have language to see where there were cracks so you could repair them

Many of you shared that these conversations helped you grow closer, improve communication, and move from surviving together to intentionally choosing each other again.

Now, you don’t have to get as radical as us and create a podcast to make these conversations a reality.

Start by naming the conversation you’ve been avoiding. Whether it’s sex, finances, emotional connection, or something else that’s been sitting beneath the surface, extraordinary couples don’t shy away from important conversations.

Choose one area of your marriage to focus on together. Using The 6 Pillars of Intimacy®, talk about which pillar needs attention right now. And remember: you don’t have to solve everything in one sitting.

Don’t wait for spontaneous moments. Put your conversations on the calendar at a time when you can both be fully present and free from distractions or interruptions.

See your spouse as your teammate. Sometimes these conversations get tense. But it’s always the two of you versus the problem, not you versus your spouse.

Ultimately, honest conversations are what truly strengthen a marriage. Make this a part of your relationship, and you’ll be well on your way to an extraordinary marriage.
