895: The Real Reason Sex Fades

Desire doesn’t just disappear—it goes quiet when it doesn’t feel safe to speak.” —Alisa DiLorenzo

sex fades

“This is just what happens when you’ve been married a long time.”

“We’ve lost our chemistry.”

“Maybe this part of our marriage is just over.”

These are the stories many couples tell themselves when their sexual intimacy fades.

Here’s the truth: Sex rarely fades because the love or desire disappears.

More often, it fades because…

  • Life is exhausting
  • Stress is constant
  • Conflict goes unresolved
  • Touch becomes rushed or transactional
  • There’s more pressure than connection

For too many couples, sex stops being a place of connection and starts feeling like a performance, a chore, or a source of tension.

You start feeling distant in the bedroom not because the love is gone, but because you’ve stopped talking about this crucial part of your marriage.

And when sexual intimacy fades, you lose more than just sex.

Without conversation, you each begin creating your own story:

  • “I’m not enough.”
  • “I’m too much.”
  • “They don’t care anymore.”

These silent stories create a vicious cycle of rejection, withdrawal, resentment, and distance. You’ve got to interrupt the cycle.

Desire doesn’t grow in environments of tension. You need to rebuild your emotional intimacy first so there’s trust, safety, and connection.

Start by talking about sex without trying to fix everything. A simple question like, “How do you feel about our sexual connection right now?” can get the ball rolling, as long as you stay calm and open to hearing each other.

Second, rethink how you associate desire with pressure. If every conversation or touch is expected to lead to sex, you need to rebuild your emotional and physical intimacy first. Talking about sex doesn’t mean sex has to happen in that moment.

In addition, practice more loving, non-sexual touch throughout the week, such as holding hands, sitting close, hugging, and cuddling together.

The real reason sex fades isn’t because you’ve stopped caring. It’s because you’ve stopped having the conversations that create the connection and safety sexual intimacy needs to thrive. And when safety returns, desire often follows.
