904: Weekly Rhythms That Keep Marriages Strong

Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.” —John Maxwell

Marriage habits can be hard to start and even easier to lose. But it’s the small, consistent rhythms that build real closeness and connection (in other words, intimacy).

So how do you break up the monotony of everyday life to actually connect with your spouse?

Start by being honest: do you and your spouse have weekly habits that strengthen your marriage?

When we asked that question, the answers were eye-opening. Only 17% of you said yes. The other 83% said “not really” or “not consistently.”

And the reasons were consistent too: too tired, too busy, or no clear plan.

Here’s the problem: those things feel normal and unavoidable in the moment. But over time, they erode your marriage and your connection.

Doing one thing consistently each week could be the difference between a strong, thriving marriage and one that’s struggling.

When we asked, “What’s one thing you wish you did weekly?” couples across the board agreed:

  • Date nights
  • Sex
  • Check-in conversations
  • Prayer together
  • Intentional time together

Nobody wants more logistics. Everyone wants more connection.

When there’s no weekly rhythm, connection becomes occasional, and you start living like roommates.

So here are three habits you can start today:

1. A weekly check-in conversation. Set aside 20–30 minutes once a week to ask real, meaningful questions:

  • How are we doing?
  • What felt heavy this week?
  • What are you proud of?
  • Where do you need support?

If you want structure for that conversation, The 6 Pillars of Intimacy® Monthly Planner walks you through exactly what to talk about with questions, prompts, and more.

2. Weekly intentional sexual intimacy. This doesn’t mean following a rigid set of rules, and it doesn’t have to mean only intercourse. You get to define what this looks like together. It could be:

  • Scheduling it (The Intimacy Lifestyle)
  • One of you initiating
  • Trying something new
  • Simply protecting time for connection

3. Weekly time that feels different than normal life. Many of you listed date nights, walk-and-talks, the gym together, and praying together as moments that feel special. When your calendar reflects that your marriage matters, your marriage feels like it matters.

This week, choose one pillar and go deeper in just that area. Get realistic and get intentional.

If 35% of you said you’re too tired and 29% said your calendar is overbooked, motivation alone won’t cut it.

You need rhythm. And marriage rhythms are built one day at a time.
