905: Invite God Into Your Marriage

“A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” —Ecclesiastes 4:12

invite God

“We feel more connected when we pray together.” That’s not a quote from us. That’s what 62% of the ONE Family said!

Spiritual intimacy looks different for every couple. But whether you attend services, do a devotional, serve somewhere, or something else entirely, it’s absolutely a vital pillar in a healthy marriage.

Praying together is one of the small acts of spiritual intimacy that can have a massive impact on your marriage.

There’s a reason we wrote in The 6 Pillars of Intimacy that spiritual intimacy can actually be more intimate than sexual intimacy. It invites vulnerability, connection, and real insight into your spouse.

Do couples in the ONE Family pray together regularly? Here’s what you told us on Instagram:

  • 24% said yes
  • 21% said sometimes
  • 23% said rarely
  • 32% said never

For the couples who rarely or never pray together, that doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t believe in prayer or don’t love God.

But lots of you shared why praying together can feel so hard:

  • “It feels awkward.”
  • “I don’t like praying out loud.”
  • “We pray at different times.”
  • “We’re not emotionally connected.”
  • “I’m not sure where to start.”

Here’s why this matters: the majority of you said that when you pray together, you feel more connected.

The one thing couples say they long for more than anything is a deeper connection in their marriage. If praying together isn’t part of yours, this might be a simple habit that brings you closer.

Here’s how to invite God into your marriage through prayer.

Start smaller than you think. Even just one word can shift things in your heart, soul, and marriage.

  • “God, thank You for today.”
  • “Help us with ______.”
  • “Give us patience.”
  • “Jesus.”

Stop thinking that prayer has to be a performance. It can be short, simple, and filled with moments of silence. As long as your heart is set on drawing closer to each other and to God, you really can’t get it wrong.

Anchor prayer to an existing habit. You can pray anytime, and it might be easier to make it stick by pairing it with something you already do consistently. Try it before bed, during a walk, after a hard conversation, or before you head out the door in the morning.

Pray even when it feels hard, and especially then. Low emotional intimacy can make vulnerability through prayer feel scary. But that’s exactly when it matters most. Strengthening your spiritual intimacy is one of the best ways to strengthen emotional intimacy, and praying together is a direct pathway to unity.

It doesn’t matter how you do it. God hears every prayer.
