911: I Want a Future With You

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” —Jim Rohn

want a future

There is a conversation happening in a lot of marriages right now… and in many cases, it is not even being said out loud.

One spouse is quietly thinking: I want a future with you. I want to travel, enjoy life, be active together… but I am worried because you are not taking care of yourself.

And the other spouse may be thinking: I am fine. This is just what happens when you get older. Or maybe: I do not have time for that right now. I will deal with it later.

Aging is inevitable. But the rapid decline so many people simply accept? That part is not.

The belief that declining health is just a natural part of getting older is a narrative that has far more to do with your marriage than you might expect. Because this does not stay contained to one person.

And this is not about physical appearance. Your health affects your shared life, your shared experiences, and the number of shared years you get to have together.

It is easy to let the busyness of life crowd this out… but you do not have to buy into that story.

One of the most helpful ways to look at this is through the lens of The 6 Pillars of Intimacy®.

  • When there is unspoken fear or frustration brewing, emotional intimacy starts to erode, and one spouse begins to feel alone in their worry about the future.
  • As energy and how you feel in your body shifts, physical intimacy changes too. Those everyday, non-sexual touches may start to feel different or happen less often.
  • Financial intimacy comes into the picture when you think about the real cost of healthcare down the road.
  • Spiritual intimacy is touched as well… sometimes the worried spouse does not know what to do except bring it to God and pray for a breakthrough.
  • Recreational intimacy takes a hit when you can no longer move your body the way you once did, making it harder to walk, travel, explore, or just be active together.
  • And sexual intimacy is deeply connected to health, because desire, confidence, and function all follow how you feel.

Underneath all of it is one question: Are we going to have the kind of future we once talked about?

We hear it all the time… “I just want us to take care of ourselves so we actually get to enjoy it.”

That conversation is the first step toward the extraordinary marriage you both deserve.
