How Lingerie Can Boost Confidence, Desire, and Sexual Intimacy

Your naked body is a gift to your spouse. And lingerie is like the sexiest wrapping paper you’ve ever seen.

How Lingerie Can Boost Confidence, Desire, and Sexual Intimacy

We recently asked the ONE Family whether lingerie plays a role in their marriage, and about two-thirds of them said yes. That’s a pretty significant chunk of couples who have figured out that this particular tool has a place in their marriage toolbox.

But don’t get it twisted: lingerie isn’t a moral issue. It’s not a “good couple” or “bad couple” thing. It’s simply one of many ways you can enhance sexual intimacy. And it’s completely up to the two of you to decide whether it belongs in your marriage and how you use it.

How Lingerie Can Enhance Your Sexual Intimacy

There’s a reason so many couples find that lingerie adds something to their sex life. It can enhance so many aspects of your sexual experience!

  • Color. A fun or sexy color communicates your intentions before a single word is even spoken.
  • Texture. Silk, satin, lace, cotton. The sensation of different fabrics against your skin (and your spouse’s hands) adds a layer of physical intimacy. It invokes new sensations and deeper connection.
  • Confidence. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it changes how you show up. There’s something about slipping into a beautiful piece of lingerie that can help you feel sexy, confident, or whatever word you want to use. (Plus, your spouse notices!)
  • Desire. Lingerie builds anticipation by creating a visual and emotional cue that something special is happening. That excitement is part of what makes sex feel electric instead of routine.

The combination of all four of these elements is why so many couples find that lingerie enhances sexual intimacy in a variety of ways.

Quick Q&A: Your Lingerie Questions, Answered

Q: Who should buy the lingerie?

A: There’s no right answer here. In fact, use this as a great conversation starter!

Some wives love when their husband picks out a few options he finds most appealing, and then she can share her size and preferences from his picks. Other couples enjoy going shopping together. Some wives prefer to surprise their husbands entirely. Try different approaches and see what feels fun for both of you.

Q: What if lingerie feels uncomfortable or itchy?

A: This is such a common reason couples skip lingerie, and yet it’s the most fixable one! Not all lingerie is created equal. Do you prefer silk, satin, lace, or cotton? A flowing nightie, a matching set, a one-piece? The goal is to find something that makes you feel beautiful and reasonably comfortable.

Yes, like a great pair of heels on date night, some lingerie is about the experience more than pure comfort, but there’s absolutely something out there that works for your body.

Q: What if lingerie feels unnecessary? It’s just going to come off anyway, right?

A: We hear this one a lot! But don’t forget: the unwrapping is part of the experience. The anticipation of seeing it before it comes off is where a lot of the value lives.

Q: What if cost is a barrier?

A: Lingerie doesn’t have to be expensive. There are so many affordable options out there. It might be worth adding a small lingerie line to your budget (even just enough for one or two new pieces a year). Think of it as an investment in your sexual intimacy.

Q: What if pornography has been part of our story?

A: If pornography has impacted your marriage, have an honest conversation about how to approach lingerie in a safe and healthy way. There are model-free lingerie shopping options available. You may also need to decide together whether the spouse who has struggled with pornography should or shouldn’t be the one browsing for lingerie. Please don’t skip this conversation.

So, What Works for You?

At the end of the day, lingerie is just one tool in your marriage toolbox. It’s not good or bad.

But what is too important to ignore is the conversation around lingerie.

This topic opens the door to talking about desire, confidence, anticipation, and what makes you both feel most connected. And that conversation is crucial for strong sexual intimacy!

A few things worth discussing with your spouse:

  • Does lingerie have a role in our marriage?
  • What’s worked before, and what hasn’t?
  • How often would we like to incorporate lingerie?
  • Are there certain styles, fabrics, or colors that feel exciting to one or both of us?
  • Are there any boundaries or considerations we need to discuss first?

And keep in mind, your preferences will probably change over the years. What feels exciting right now might feel different in five years. And something you’d never considered before might become something you both love. Keep an open mind and keep trying new things.
