The Africa Tour: How The 6 Pillars of Intimacy® Transforms Marriages Across the World

Some of our first podcast listeners were from the continent of Africa. Couples in the ONE Family have supported us from afar for over a decade.

So when the opportunity came to finally travel to Africa ourselves and share The 6 Pillars of Intimacy® framework in person… it felt like a full-circle moment we had been waiting for without even knowing it.

What happened in Zimbabwe and Zambia over those two weeks is too good to keep to ourselves.

The Journey Begins

We departed the USA and after a long (very long) journey across the Atlantic, we touched down at R.G. Mugabe International Airport in Harare, Zimbabwe. What greeted us was something we never could have expected.

There was a media welcome waiting for us. Cameras, reporters, and a warm and enthusiastic Zimworx team.

We had barely gotten off the plane and we were already being featured in the press: NewsDay Zimbabwe covered our arrival and the full itinerary of what was ahead.

The First Couples Session: Zimbali Gardens

Our first session set the tone for everything that followed.

Zimworx hosted a married couples dinner at the beautiful Zimbali Gardens, and approximately 70 couples showed up ready to invest in their relationship.

We shared The 6 Pillars of Intimacy® and the room was electric. There was laughter. There were tears. And for many couples, there were moments of real breakthrough.

NewsDay Zimbabwe covered the evening and captured something powerful that Tony said: “We didn’t know what we didn’t know about marriage.” That right there is exactly why a framework matters.

Sharing with Singles

One thing we did not fully anticipate was the hunger for marriage preparation from the singles in Zimbabwe.

We held two sessions specifically for singles during our time in Africa, and what struck us both was how intentional these young men and women were. In a world where marriage is often entered into haphazardly, these attendees wanted to know what it actually takes to build something strong and lasting.

We were able to lay out The 6 Pillars of Intimacy® as a blueprint.

Exploring Zimbabwe

On one of the rare days when we were not speaking at an event, we were given a tour of the Patrick Mavros Studio. And unbeknownst to us, the tour was led by Patrick himself.

What struck us was learning that this entire extraordinary, world-renowned business began when Patrick made a pair of earrings for his wife. A marriage at the center of a legacy!

After that, we spent the afternoon touring four Zimworx philanthropic sites: an orphanage, a safe house, KidsCan (a home away from home for children battling cancer), and a deaf school. Each one was different and each one was amazing.

Business Leaders & Church Leaders

We had the privilege of speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce Zimbabwe (AmCham) Married Couples Dinner to a room full of business leaders and their spouses.

Watching The 6 Pillars of Intimacy® land in that context was something special. These are high-capacity people who pour everything into building businesses and organizations… and they were hungry for a framework that helps them build their marriages with the same intentionality.

The following evening, we spoke at a Church Leaders and Chaplains Date Night, also at Zimbali Gardens. Equipping pastors and chaplains with The 6 Pillars of Intimacy® is something close to our hearts, because when leaders are strong in their marriages, the ripple effect into their communities is immeasurable.

Zimbabwe’s largest daily newspaper, The Herald Online, covered the growing conversation around marriage in the country in connection with our visit.

The Couples Picnic: 100+ Couples and Every Pillar on Display

Young Couples Hub, sponsored by Zimworx, hosted an outdoor Couples Picnic and the setup was stunning. Each of The 6 Pillars of Intimacy® had its own beautiful banner displayed throughout the space.

Couples were walking through them, photographing them, talking about them with their spouses. We had over 100 couples in attendance representing everywhere from 3 months married to 20 years and beyond.

The energy in that outdoor space was something we will not forget. These couples were not just attending an event. They were investing in their marriages. The Herald Online covered this day too.

On to Zambia and Victoria Falls

After a wild travel day (cancelled flight and all), we arrived in Zambia with grateful hearts. And then… Victoria Falls.

We cannot properly put into words what we experienced there. There was a rainbow over the falls the entire time we stood there. The entire time. It felt like God winking at us… like a reminder that He had been in every single moment of this trip. The early morning game drive was amazing too.

We hosted one final Couples Session before making our way through Harare and Johannesburg, and then home to the USA.

Our Biggest Takeaway

Two weeks. Two countries. Hundreds of couples, singles, pastors, business leaders, and community builders ready to create an extraordinary marriage.
