4 QUICK TIPS TO IMPROVING COMMUNICATION IN YOUR MARRIAGE

Are you and your spouse great communicators when it comes to your marriage, family, sex life, and the many other areas of life?

If you’re saying to yourself  “no way” you’re not alone.

One of the bigger issues we hear from you in emails, calls, and on Instagram and Facebook is the lack of emotional intimacy, communication, in your marriage.

This lack of emotional intimacy frustrates you because you don’t have ESP and can’t read your spouse’s mind. Arghhhhh!

We’ve been there in the past and truth be told we can still fall victim to poor communication. Listen to a few of our podcasts and we’re sure you’ll catch our communication breakdowns.

Nonetheless you need to learn how to effectively communicate with your spouse. This way when there is a breakdown in your communication you can go back to what you have learned. Applying this knowledge to the specific situation will allow both you and your spouse to adjust and have deeper emotional intimacy.

4 Tips to Improving Communication

1. Listen – God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason. Listen twice as long as you speak. By doing this you will be showing your spouse by your actions that they are worth listening to and what they are saying is important. If you need a timer to help the two of you out grab an app on your phone and set it.

2. Repeat Back – Do exactly that. Let your spouse know what you heard them say to you. You can do this by saying, “What I heard you say was…”.

This is so important. Don’t over look this as it will help both of you clarify any misunderstandings.

3. Affirmation – At this point your spouse will either affirm that you heard them correctly or share more insights if you didn’t catch everything that was said.

Don’t get frustrated if your spouse shares more insights with you. Take a deep breath, relax and don’t get defensive. Your spouse is wanting that deep emotional intimacy that connects the two of you together.

4. Acknowledge – Now you can decide how to respond to what you have heard. Together come up with a plan of action that will positively impact your marriage.
